Dr. Kim’s consultation involves a detailed discussion of your nasal anatomy, goals, and any functional concerns. He’ll guide you through surgical options, explaining the steps and outcomes to help you feel fully informed.
Dr. Kim believes that it is vital that patients grasp the steps of the procedure, as well as understand what is possible. During your pre-surgery consultation, he will encourage you to refer to photos and ask questions.
In addition to the conversational preparation with Dr. Kim, there are some basic medical recommendations to follow prior to a rhinoplasty, such as avoiding smoking as well as medications such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen.
Days following, Post-Operative Care #5
First 24 hours after nose surgery
Within the first day after surgery, patients typically experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. Cold compresses and prescribed medication help manage these early symptoms. Keeping the head elevated at all times is essential to minimize swelling and promote proper drainage. Some bleeding or drainage from the nose may occur, which is normal during this initial phase.
Week 1
During the first week, most of the acute swelling and bruising begin to subside. Nasal splints or internal supports, if placed during surgery, are typically removed around day 5 to 7. Rhinoplasty patients often report a feeling of nasal obstruction, which is usually due to internal swelling rather than any structural issue. Activity should remain limited, and rest continues to play a key role in the healing process.
Weeks 2 to 4
By the second week, most patients begin to feel more comfortable returning to light daily activities, although strenuous exercise and any activity that risks facial impact must still be avoided. Swelling continues to improve, but some degree of puffiness may persist, especially around the nasal tip. Residual internal swelling may still cause mild breathing difficulty, which gradually improves.
One to Three Months
Throughout the next several weeks, the nasal shape begins to refine as swelling slowly decreases. The tip may still appear swollen, and the nose may feel firm to the touch. Patients are closely monitored during this phase to ensure that healing is progressing correctly. The recovery period during these months is crucial for achieving long-term results, as subtle changes continue to occur beneath the skin.

Rhinoplasty FAQ
When you undergo rhinoplasty surgery, you will be administered either general anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or local anesthesia, depending on the severity of your procedure – regardless, you shouldn’t feel any pain. You will also be prescribed pain medication by Dr. Kim to help your healing process be pain-free.
After your Rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Kim will have you follow up after a week. During that appointment, he will remove bandages, nasal splints, and/or stitches, as well as monitor your initial recovery period.
After your initial follow-up, he will have you return a few more times over the next few months to monitor your Rhinoplasty results. Your follow up appointment schedule will be determined by your healing and your availability.
Dr. Kim will always inform you of your next expected visit at the end of each appointment.
Traditionally, patients return to work or school at 1 week after surgery. By two weeks, most patients have no bruising and can make public appearances without others noticing that they’ve had surgery.
Swelling will persist for months, however, so patients, their families, and close friends will continue to notice resolution of all the swelling and improvement in the contour over the year. Patients will continue to see improvements in shape and airflow for about one year after surgery.
Despite the skill level of a Facial Plastic Surgeon like Dr. Kim, there are always potential risks associated with any surgical procedure. Some of these risks include:
- Anesthesia risks
- Difficulty breathing
- Infection
- Nasal septal perforation (a hole in the nasal septum) is rare. Additional surgical treatment may be necessary to repair the septum but it may be impossible to correct this complication
- Numbness
- Poor wound healing or scarring
- Possibility of a revisional rhinoplasty
- Skin discoloration and swelling
- Aesthetic dissatisfaction
